The present work by Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, a renowned Pakistani scholar, the author of a nine volume commentary on the Holy Qur’ān entitled Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, besides more than a dozen other books on various important Islamic disciplines, addresses some fundamental questions about the prophetic traditions, generally believed to be the second source of religious knowledge in Islam besides the Qur’ān. The author has taken up the fundamental questions about the prophetic ḥadīth including the authenticity of the traditions, the difference between the Sunnah and the Ḥadīth, role of isnād, its importance and its inherent limitations
